Probably the most common battle Americans fight is with their weight. Many patients will come to see a plastic surgeon after one or two pregnancies and during this time in their life they've put on more weight than they ever have before.

Frequently they'll lose this weight after having their children but their body is not quite the same. And so this opens a whole new area of plastic surgery referred to as Body Contouring.

It might involve body contouring operations such as tummy tucks. These operations use incisions to remove loose and excess skin, to tighten the abdomen as well as tighten the muscle layer. However it may not require large incisions at all. Some patients do very well with liposuction.

A final category of body contouring patients have come to me after having weight loss surgery referred to as bariatric surgery. These are a group of patients that have frequently loss 100 pounds or more. Their needs are different than the other categories of body contouring patients.

They have extensive elasticity of skin that has resulted after losing 100-150 pounds or more. A special sub category of body contouring exists for these patients. This is something that our practice has been actively involved with, as my brother is a general surgeon who performs these weight loss surgeries and we see many of their patients after they have lost this weight.

Liposculpture

This new technique has elevated liposuction to a new level. It makes use of small suction canullas that reduce the size of scars, and use the injection of dilute local anesthetic solutions, which improves the accuracy of results and reduces bleeding and bruising. It also has the added benefit of decreasing post-operative pain. This technique also calls for the suctioning of fat just below the skin, which leads to shrinkage of the overlying skin, and improvement in results when compared to standard liposuction techniques. Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the U.S. A good candidate for Liposuction would have troublesome, localized fat deposits. The best liposuction candidates would have problem areas despite healthy diet and fitness, for these people liposuction may be an only option to losing the fat in certain trouble spots. Fat Injections

Injection of fat, removed at the time of liposuction, is another recent improvement in liposuction procedures. Fat injections are performed in depressions or dimples to improve overall contour and achieve aesthetic improvements that would be unattainable with liposuction alone. Tummy Tucks

Few women escape pregnancy with ideal abdominal contour. Standard abdominoplasty and tummy tucks are perfectly suited for patients with severe stretch marks and redundant skin of the lower abdomen. Sometimes patients with lesser deformities are scared away from these procedures by the presumed long scars that course from one hip to the other. The Center for Surgical Excellence reduces the fear and the scarring by use of a procedure called Endoscopic Abdominoplasty. This procedure makes two small incisions hidden in the belly button and pubic hair. Through these virtually invisible scars, a combination of liposuction and endoscopic tightening of the abdominal muscles restores the flat abdomen the patient enjoyed prior to pregnancy. "Mini Abdominoplasty" makes use of a single scar in the lower abdomen, which is hidden by the smallest of bikinis, and is perfect for patients that fall in between these two extremes. Liposuction is often used to refine the transition zones of the abdominal sculpture, though tummy tucks can be carried out with or without liposuction, liposuction is often agreed to be a good complement.
